With National Pride and Diaspora Unity, The Order of Engineers and Architects in Lebanon, in proud partnership with the American Lebanese Engineers and Architects Network (A-LEAN), is honored to launch a new free online course:

“Timber Structural Design” — dedicated to empowering our fellow engineers in Lebanon who aspire to contribute their expertise to remote design projects in the U.S. market.

This marks the second milestone in our joint initiative, following the success of our inaugural course, “Building Permit Guidelines in the USA,” delivered by the esteemed George Haddad, AIA, from Los Angeles, California.

Course Overview:

Led by Dr Ziad Azzi, P.E., the course offers an in-depth exploration of the analysis and design of modern timber structures. It examines the impact of wood’s botanical origin and physical properties on its mechanical performance and highlights the critical role of fasteners in structural integrity.

Course Objectives:

Participants will gain a solid foundation in timber structural design. The course includes the design of wood members, structural connections, and systems in accordance with U.S. codes and standards. Engineers will also learn to assess the behavior of various timber products under different design conditions.

Tentative Course Outline:

·        Codes and Standards

·        LRFD/ASD Methods

·        Properties of Wood I (General/Grading/Products)

·        Properties of Wood II (Design Factors)

·        Structural Glued-Laminated Timber

·        Beam Design (Bending and Lateral Stability)

·        Column and Wall Design (Axial/Bending Forces)
